China: “New Chinese Regulations on Hong Kong and Implications on Global Market” – ACC ILAN Legal Quick Hit webinar on October 14th, 2021

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, had another successful legal quick hit by the International Legal Affairs Network (ILAN) of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and sponsored by the International Society of Primerus Law Firms on October 14th, 2021!  Held on two separate sessions, one for the Americas and another for Asia Pacific, Caroline had the privilege to speak about the State Secrets Laws of China and its classification, while her fellow panelist, Dominic Wai (Partner at ONC Lawyers, Hong Kong) focused on the Hong Kong National Security Law, its relevance to global companies, and collusion with foreign forces.  Moderated by Pamela Labaj (Associate General Counsel at Spirent Communications, New Jersey, USA), they discussed about the dilemma faced by global companies with relevant examples.  Caroline thanks to James Flynn (Member Services Coordinator, Primerus) and KJ Forest (Director of Practice Networks, ACC) for their coordination and assistance.

U.S. and Asia Pacific : “Privacy Beyond the GDPR and CCPA”, an ACC ILAN virtual roundtable on October 5th, 2021

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was happy to have presented on a webinar organised by the International Legal Affairs Network (ILAN) of the ACC and sponsored by the International Society of Primerus Law Firms on October 5th, 2021. An insightful session for Caroline and her fellow speakers, Dominic Wai (Partner at ONC Lawyers, Hong Kong) and Kenneth Rashbaum (Partner at Barton LLP, New York). They discussed personal data protection with case studies in the Americas, China, Singapore and Hong Kong, followed by breakout rooms. Caroline’s focus was on China and Singapore where the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) 2021 and the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2012 were discussed respectively. China and Europe: current challenges and future changes of investments, IBA China Working Group (CWG) webinar on September 15th, 2021

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was happy to moderate the webinar together with her co-Chair of the IBA CWG, David Dali Liu (JunHe Law Offices, Shanghai), joined by an engaging panel of insightful speakers: Riccardo Cajola (Cajola & Associati, Milan), Stéphane Coulaux (CMG Legal & Associés, Paris), David Du (Bosch, Shanghai), Vladimíra Glatzová (Glatzova & Co, Prague) and Patrick Schleiffer (Lenz & Staehelin, Zurich).  Discussions began on the current trends of Chinese investments into Europe, and European investments into China, based on statistics from 2018 to 2021, including regard given to the Covid-19 impact. The panel provided useful advice on compliance issues and various legal requirements. shared about the Europe merger control procedure, gave negotiation tips for investors and discussed about future challenges for investments on both directions.  Special thanks to Maria Chew (Conference & Marketing Administrator, IBA Asia) for her active coordination and assistance.

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was happy to kickoff an eight-part training series by moderating a stellar panel of brilliant lawyers: Peter Bartlett (MinterEllison, Melbourne, Victoria; Chair, IBA Legal Practice Division) gave opening remarks. Our panellists were Riccardo Cajola (Cajola & Associati, Milan; Webinar Officer, IBA Professional Ethics Committee), Michael S. Carl (SSEK Legal Consultants, Jakarta), Jose Cochingyan III (Cochingyan & Partners Law Offices, Makati City), Gábor Damjanovic (Forgó, Damjanovic & Partners, Budapest; Secretary-Treasurer, IBA Professional Ethics Committee) and Rachel McGuckian (Miles & Stockbridge, Rockville, Maryland; Scholarship Officer, IBA Professional Ethics Committee). The session started with an overview of lawyers’ ethics in China, Italy, Indonesia, Philippines, Hungary and the United States, followed by an interactive discussion on how to avoid conflicts of interest and other ethical traps.  We also presented case studies of ethical dilemmas in each country before taking questions from attendees.  Special thanks to Maria Chew (Conference & Marketing Administrator, IBA) and Juni Son (Director, Asia Office, IBA) for supporting on logistics and marketing.
