“Innovation and Technology: Emerging Partnerships Between Canada and Singapore” CanCham webinar, May 27th, 2021

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, as new President of the Canadian Chambers of Commerce in Singapore (“CanCham”), had the privilege to moderate a virtual post-AGM event titled “Innovation and Technology: Emerging Partnerships Between Canada and Singapore” featuring a terrific group of all Canadian panellists: Quentin O’Mahony (General Manager, Singapore CAE Flight Training), Nagesh Devata (Regional VP of Enterprise, Payoneer APAC) and Pavel Bains (CEO, Bluzelle), including a keynote address from H.E. Lynn McDonald, High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore. Caroline accords her thanks to Chelsea Guy (Executive Director, CanCham) for her great support and coordination throughout the events!

“The fundamentals of international legal business practice – Avoiding conflicts of interest and other ethical traps” Part 1 of virtual training series by the China Working Group (CWG) of the IBA Asia Pacific Regional Forum (APF), and the IBA Young Lawyers’ Committee (“YLC”), June 22nd, 2021

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was happy to kickoff an eight-part training series by moderating a stellar panel of brilliant lawyers: Peter Bartlett (MinterEllison, Melbourne, Victoria; Chair, IBA Legal Practice Division) gave opening remarks. Our panellists were Riccardo Cajola (Cajola & Associati, Milan; Webinar Officer, IBA Professional Ethics Committee), Michael S. Carl (SSEK Legal Consultants, Jakarta), Jose Cochingyan III (Cochingyan & Partners Law Offices, Makati City), Gábor Damjanovic (Forgó, Damjanovic & Partners, Budapest; Secretary-Treasurer, IBA Professional Ethics Committee) and Rachel McGuckian (Miles & Stockbridge, Rockville, Maryland; Scholarship Officer, IBA Professional Ethics Committee). The session started with an overview of lawyers’ ethics in China, Italy, Indonesia, Philippines, Hungary and the United States, followed by an interactive discussion on how to avoid conflicts of interest and other ethical traps.  We also presented case studies of ethical dilemmas in each country before taking questions from attendees.  Special thanks to Maria Chew (Conference & Marketing Administrator, IBA) and Juni Son (Director, Asia Office, IBA) for supporting on logistics and marketing.

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, had a great event that showcased the role of technology and the law in facilitating efficiency and transparency in the luxury industry and sustainability-related initiatives! Caroline thanks Irene Calboli (Academic Fellow, University of Geneva; Professor, Texas A&M University School of Law) for inviting her to be a panellist at the Luxury Digital Law Day organised by the Digital Law Center of the University of Geneva!  Moderated by Irene and Giangacomo Olivi (Partner, Dentons, Milan), Caroline was joined by high-profile speakers: Giorgia Armanni (Legal Director, Stella McCartney, Italy), Alessandra Sala (CSR & Sponsorship Project Manager, Generali Italia Spa), Isabelle Chaboud (Programme Director, MSc Fashion, Design & Luxury Management, and Associate Professor, Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM)), Julie Zerbo (Founder and Editor in Chief, The Fashion Law) and Franziska Gsell Etterlin (Chief Marketing Officer and Sustainability Chair IWC Schaffhausen).

“Approach to IPR in China Strategic Policy Lessons for the World” webinar, May 29th, 2021

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, joined a panel jointly organised by Surana & Surana International Attorneys (an IBLC member firm) and the Chennai Centre for China Studies (“C3S”), together with fellow IBLC members: Gabriel Leonardos (Senior Partner and Founder, Kasznar Leonardos, Brazil) and Roick C.K. Feng (Managing Partner, Zhong Yin Law Firm, Taipei), and Commodore R.S. Vasan (Director, C3S, India) with moderator, Dr. Vinod Surana (Managing Partner & CEO, Surana & Surana, India). Caroline discussed important IPR updates in China, current trends in the changing global economic environment, as well as China’s stand regarding IP waiver for the coronavirus vaccines, summed up on what the future holds for cooperation between China and India. Lynn McDonald, High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore!  She gave the opening remarks on behalf of The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (CanCham) as president.  The event was in collaboration with the High Commission of Canada in Singapore (www.canadainternational.gc.ca) and the Brookfield Women’s Network Asia (www.brookfield.com). Caroline accords her thanks to Jolyn Ho (Vice President, Brookfield) and Lina Hu (Senior Associate, Client Relationship Manager, Brookfield) for the smooth prep and collaboration!
