Championnat annuel inter-universités de quilles organisé par Canadian Alumni Singapore, Singapour, 13 mai 2017

Cette année, l’équipe de HJM Asia Law a participé au championnat annuel inter-universités de quilles organisé par le Canadian Alumni Singapore, lequel s’est déroulé au SuperBowl, SAFRA Toa Payoh. Même si elle n’a pas été couronnée championne, notre équipe a eu beaucoup de plaisir et reviendra plus forte l’an prochain!

Teaching “Intellectual Property in Asia” to the class of Sorbonne-ASSAS International Law School, LL.M. International Business Law 2016-2017 in December 2016 was again a great experience for our Managing Partner, Caroline Berube. She is a Canadian New York/Singapore attorney who has been based in Asia and handling corporate/ commercial law with technology companies from all over the world dealing with their IP matters in the Asia Pacific region for more than 18 years. She has built up a well-respected  level of expertise and is especially well-regarded for her practical advice on technology transfer, IP special vehicles and IP matters in Asian countries.

Young Global Leaders Annual Summit 2016, Tokyo, October 18th to October 21st, 2016

Caroline Berube, the Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was selected as a Young Global Leader  by the World Economic Forum which recognizes the most distinguished leaders under the age of 40. She attended the Young Global Leaders Annual Summit 2016 in Tokyo. The WEF is an international institution committed to improving the state of the world through public-private cooperation and engages political, business, academic and other leaders of society in collaborative efforts to shape global, regional and industry agendas. Asia Strategies: Protecting your IP, Enforcing Contracts & Defining Hong Kong’s Role, the International Trade Association of Greater Chicago, May 11th, 2016 (Chicago)

The special luncheon program was held and sponsored by the International Trade Association of Greater Chicago with the Hong Kong Business Association of the Midwest.  Caroline Berube, Managing Partner, HJM Asia Law, and Kristina Koehler-Coluccia, Director, Koehler Group were guest speakers at the seminar.  As China’s economy matures and slows, and Southeast Asian countries seek greater economic integration among themselves and through the Trans-Pacific Partnership, they provided fresh insight on some key strategic issues faced by U.S. exporters, importers and investors. Caroline, in particular, covered the topic of “Pitfalls in Commercial Contracts and IP Risks in Asian Jurisdictions”.  You can find out more event information here: Asia Strategies Event

IPBA 2016 Annual Meeting and Conference, April 13th-16th, 2016 (Kuala Lumpur)

Caroline Berube, the Managing Partner of HJM, attended the IPBA 2016 Annual Meeting & Conference which took place in Kuala Lumpur in May 2016. Caroline was a speaker at the “Labor law issues in the M&A transactions “ session during the conference where she covered Singapore and China and spoke on the topics such as the validity of the employment contract and applicable labour law. Teaching Assignment at the Executive Legal International Spring Class, Sorbonne Assas International Law School, March 2016

Caroline Berube taught a 10 hour “Legal Environment for Doing Business in Asia” class at the Sorbonne ASSAS Law School, Asia Campus. Caroline has over 18 years of experience of working in China and is well versed in local “ways of doing business”. As Caroline is a Western foreign lawyer in China, she also provides a unique perspective which her Western clients appreciate when expanding into China. Caroline covered topics such as Laws/regulation and court system in China, legal frameworks, various contracts, legal structure, corporate law, labor and employment law and IP in China. “Intellectual Property in China” Webinar, Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, March 15th, 2016

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, in collaboration with Export Development Canada, has organized another “Intellectual Property in China” or “Propriété intellectuelle en Chine” webinar for its members, this time conducted in French. The webinar helped to demystify the myths and realities of intellectual property in a business context and allowed participants to understand their intellectual property rights, and thereby protect themselves and their company, particularly in a constantly evolving new environment. Caroline is passionate about IP in Asia and its fast constant development and loves sharing her insight on topics such as particularities of IP in China, trademark conventions, challenges of IP litigation, and pre-emptive measures of IP protection.
