HJM team volunteered at the Willing Hearts, Singapore on December 17th, 2020 in conjunction with Primerus Global Day of Community

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, and her team, had a gratifying experience volunteering at the soup kitchen of Willing Hearts Singapore, a charity preparing and distributing daily meals to the needy! Bravo to the Singapore team members who turned up as early as 5am! The activity was also held in conjunction with the annual Primerus Global Day of Service on December 5th, 2020 which promotes and encourages giving something back to the community. Canada Immigration – Federal Skilled Worker Program and Student Pathways, Webinar on December 1st, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, gives a warm “Thank You” to Georgina Mieke (Migration Director at S.E.A. Business Centre Pte. Ltd.) for inviting her colleague, Katina Hunter-Sutcliffe (Senior Associate – Business Mobility & Immigration (North America) at HJM Asia Law & Co LLC) and herself to introduce HJM and give an overview of Canada’s Federal Skilled Worker Program and its recent changes.  Katina also touched on student pathways to Canada given Indonesian’s keen interest in the topic. The webinar was moderated by Mahesa Prasetya (Community and Event Manager at CONNEXT) in Jakarta, Indonesia.

 

Teaching “Intellectual Property in Asia” to LL.M. International Business Law students, Sorbonne-Assas International Law School, from November 23-24, 2020 at INSEAD Asia Campus

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was very happy to teach LL.M students from various countries and different professional backgrounds at Sorbonne-Assas to. She taught “Intellectual Property in Asia” with practical case studies. Hosted at the Singapore INSEAD Asia Campus, this LLM is offered by Sorbonne-Assas International Law School in partnership with Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas. Our M&A China 2020 chapter is out – Lexology Getting The Deal Through (GTDT) – Practice Guide for China

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was proud to see our HJM’s chapter on China Public M&A published in the Lexology GTDT third edition of Public M&A 2020. Teaching “Tech Law/Intellectual Property in Asia” to students of the LL.M. in Law of Internet Technology, Bocconi University, from November 12th to 14th, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, had another great experience teaching LL.M Bocconi students of Laurent Manderieux (Director of the LL.M. program, Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Law Department at Bocconi University). Prof. Manderieux’s students always show interest and ask relevant questions! The challenge was teaching virtually and make 8 hours of teaching the practical aspects of Asia tech law and IP cases as interactive as possible, which Caroline achieved. Day 1 was a combination of about 160 LL.M and engineer students – a great combination of knowledge and experience! Caroline accords special thanks to Laurent Manderieux and Gabriele Gagliani (LL.M., Ph.D. II Lecturer at Bocconi University) for again having invited her to lecture their smart students for another year, and to Dr. Marta Menin for her administrative assistance. “China’s investment in and trade with America” session for the Asia Pacific Regional Forum at the IBA 2020 Virtually Together Conference, November 9th, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was thrilled to be part of this huge virtual conference which is taking place until November 27th, 2020.  Caroline had a great time moderating Monday’s session with her fellow Co-Chair at the China Working Group (CWG) of the International Bar Association (IBA), David Liu (JunHe LLP, Shanghai).  The expert speakers: Arturo Alessandri C (Alessandri Abogados, Santiago), Stephen Bowman (Bennett Jones LLP, Toronto), Eric Emerson (Steptoe & Johnson LLP, Washington DC), Reinaldo Ma (TozziniFreire Advogados, Sao Paulo) and Lingchen Pu (Zhong Lun Law Firm, Beijing) discussed the legal perspectives of China’s economic relationship, its development, changes and trends, with North and Latin America.

 

 

Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) Dispute Resolution, International Business Law Consortium (IBLC) AGM Breakout Session on October 1st, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, enjoyed speaking about the Belt and Road Initiative Dispute Resolution at the recent IBLC annual general meeting 2020. Paired with fellow speaker, Paul Hopkins (Partner, Geldards LLP, Cardiff), Caroline shared her views on the topic of online negotiation, mediation and arbitration in light of BRI projects during COVID.  The session provided an overview of the BRI and dispute resolution and wrapped up with a discussion on evaluative versus facilitative mediation in resolving BRI disputes. Other panelists included Peter Pang (Chairman and Managing Partner, IPO Pang Xingpu, Shanghai) as commentator, Jeff Leong (Jeff Leong, Poon & Wong, Kuala Lumpur) and Federico Antich (Founder, Studio dell’Avvocato Antich, Firenze).

 

 

International Practice Committee (IPC) Elephant Call, International Society of Primerus Law Firms, October 6th, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, hosted the “Elephant monthly call” on October 6th,  for the IPC group members. She interviewed Dominic Wai (Partner at ONC Lawyers, Hong Kong), Howard Greenspoon and Lyanne Winikoff (Partners at Greenspoon Winikoff S.E.N.C.R.L., LLP, Montreal), Chris Mooney (Partner at Marriott Harrison LLP, London) and Besse Dozadiaz (Ferris & Britton, APC, San Diego) who shared legal and personal facts about practicing law in their respective cities. Stanford University, “Strategies for Sustainability – Essentials for Business: Put Theory into Practice”, Young Global Leaders (“YGL”) Executive Education Module, September 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, completed the Stanford University YGL executive course focusing on sustainability put into business practice. Directed by YGL 2010, Professor of Practice Julia Novy and Professor Pamela Matson, this one-and-only online course launched at the conclusion of the YGL Annual Summit in August 2020. EEXPO.SG – Made in Africa, virtual conference on August 26th, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law with an Asia Africa desk,  truly believes in Africa Asia business and she attended the “Made in AFRICA” virtual conference which brought together six African countries, represented by respective embassies and high commissions in Singapore: Angola, Egypt, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe.  The conference was organised by Olam International, supported by Enterprise Singapore and Singapore Business Federation, and hosted by Sun Media Pte. Investigating Misconduct in Foreign Jurisdictions – Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Asia Pacific (APAC) webinar on August 26th, 2020

YGL Annual Summit 2020, The Forum of Young Global Leaders (an initiative of the World Economic Forum): The Great Reset, August 17th to August 20th, 2020

Topics discussed: legal perspectives to data privacy enforcement in the context of contact tracking apps and remote access surveillance apps, in today’s rapidly changing environment with the pandemic. Caroline’s focus was on China and Singapore where compliance and surveillance measures are stringent to protect the public interest.

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was thrilled to be the moderator of a successful first webinar organised by the IBA China Working Group (CWG)! Speakers on the panel were brilliant and insightful: Christopher Blake (Hahn Loeser & Parks, Cleveland, Co-Chair, IBA International Commerce and Distribution Committee), Hui (Harrison) Jia (DeHeng Law Offices, Beijing), David Liu (Duan & Duan, Shanghai) and Dirk Schwenn (Schomerus & Partner, Hamburg, Senior Vice Chair, IBA International Commerce and Distribution Committee). Caroline and the speakers discussed whether supply agreement and distribution agreements remain valid during the pandemic crisis and tips to re-negotiate with your Asian suppliers key terms, just to name a few. Law firm management and ethical considerations – International Bar Association (IBA) webinar, May 12th, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was happy to be on a IBA webinar panel on Tuesday, moderated by Riccardo Cajola (Cajola & Associati, Italy) with fellow speakers: Tracey Calvert (Oakalls Consultancy, UK), Martin Kovnats (Aird & Berlis, Canada) and Abe Schear (Arnall Golden & Gregory, USA).  Caroline and her fellow speakers discussed issues surrounding ethics and their impact on the management of a law firm. The panel shared with the audience some thoughts on how law firms can best approach its management to ensure compliance with ethical rules and regulatory standards in a global environment. “Doing Business in China” – Chicago Bar Association webcast, May 8th, 2020

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, had a wonderful time speaking on the CBA webcast and wishes to thank John Sciaccotta (Aronberg Goldgehn), Angie Cruz (Manager of Office Services & Events Coordinator, CBA), and Ricardo Isla (Technical manager, CBA). The Variable Capital Company: an answer to Singapore’s fund management Sector?

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, the Chair of the Asia Pacific Region for Primerus, a society of the world’s finest independent, boutique law firms, is proud to contribute a feature article on its inaugural Vol. 1 Asia Pacific Newsletter published for April 2020.  Caroline and colleague, Matthew Boyd (Corporate Secretary, HJM Asia Law and Procosec Asia) shared their insights about the Variable Capital Companies Act 2018 which was passed into Singapore law on January 14th, 2020.  The creation of the Variable Capital Company (or “VCC”) represents Singapore’s efforts to boost its fund management industry by providing a fund-friendly legal entity. Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law was speaking on a virtual panel organised by AIJA – International Association of Young Lawyers, hosted by Emiliano Ganzarolli (Audisio e Associati, Italy). Caroline was joined by Benedikt Rohrssen (Taylor Wessing, Germany) and Clémence Colin (J.P. Karsenty Karsenty et Associés, France), and together we discussed on best practices post COVID-19 crisis for our clients covering employment, supply chain and transactions. We also shared our experiences on how law firms can overcome financial stress and survive in the long term. I truly enjoyed the informal conversations, with short questions and answers, and left the audience, which was very interactive, some food for thought as a takeaway. Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, taught a 3-day Executive Program with CPD accreditation in Singapore with Sorbonne-Assas Law School.  Conducted entirely through webinar given our current social distancing measures, Caroline had the pleasure to share insights on the legal framework of setting up legal entities in China and related aspects in employment and intellectual property, with real concrete examples. Business Immigration: Work permit for Foreign Talents to/from Asia and the USA/Canada: Association of Corporate Counsel/Primerus held on March 12th, 2020 (Webinar)

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner and Katina Hunter-Sutcliffe, Senior Associate, were speaker on the quick hit program of the Association of Corporate Counsel International Legal Affairs Network (ACC ILAN), sponsored by The International Society of Primerus Law Firms, which was held via a webinar on March 12th, 2020. Joined by Mr. Felix Tin (Consultant at ONC Lawyers), Ms. Katina Hunter Sutcliffe (Senior Associate at HJM Asia Law & Co), Ms. Yee Mei Chow (Associate at Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers), Caroline and fellow presenters shared important issues regarding hiring foreign talents in Singapore, China, Hong Kong, US/Canada, and Australia, respectively. Katina covered work permits options for Asian talent going to the USA and Canada for training at the headquarter of their employers and Caroline covered work permits required when sending foreign talent to China and Singapore. CANS CNY Reunion Dinner 2020, on February 4th, 2020 in Singapore

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, reconnected with fellow McGillians in conjunction with the Chinese New Year of the Rat 2020.  She was happy that HJM sponsored a HJM table at the McGill Reunion Dinner proudly presented by the Canadian Alumni Network Singapore (CAN.SG). Asia/Africa: South Africa Trade Mission: Business Sharing Session on November 26th, 2019 in Singapore

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, gave a business briefing about company set up, intellectual property, contract terms and key aspects of employment law to 18 participating South African companies on the trade mission hosted by the South Africa High Commission, Singapore. The trade mission was held on November 26th/27th, 2019 at the Carlton Hotel Singapore to promote South Africa as one of the most sophisticated, diverse and promising trade and investment destinations for Singaporean companies. Teaching “Intellectual Property in Asia” to LL.M. students in International Business Law, Sorbonne-Assas International Law School, on November 25th and 26th, 2019 in Singapore

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, taught young aspiring lawyers and professionals at Sorbonne-Assas last November. She spent two consecutive days teaching on “Intellectual Property (IP) in Asia” with practical case studies. The IP module was part of a series of lectures including those of Prof. Jean-Christophe Galloux (Professor at Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas, and President of IP Research Institute of Paris) and Sharmini Lohadhasan (Counsel and Trade Marks Advisor at BP Singapore). Hosted at the Singapore INSEAD Asia Campus, the LLM is offered by Sorbonne-Assas International Law School in partnership with Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas. Caroline introduced best practices of the industry to prepare professionals applying their IP knowledge into real-life business experiences. Scotiabank Panel Discussion held on November 21st, 2019 (Singapore): Gaining Ground ~ Real Insights from Real Leaders

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law was speaking on the panel titled “Gaining Ground – Real Insights from Real Leaders” at the Scotiabank’s Diversity & Inclusion Gender committee event held in Singapore on November 21st, 2019.  The event was graced by the presence of Her Excellency, Nancy Lynn McDonald (Canada’s High Commissioner to Singapore). The panel was moderated by Mr. Craig Marran (Managing Director, Head of Originations, Scotiabank). Together with a panel of inspiring female leaders, Caroline, Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Lalitha Biddulph (Head of Global Technology Infrastructure at J.P. Morgan) and Mrs. Vandna Dawar Ramchandani (Regional Head of Talent Acquisition, Corporate Philanthropy and Engagement at Bloomberg), shared their experience on today’s business environment and industry trends and discussed how to promote gender balance in the workplace.

 

Belgian Economic Mission to China – Official Signing Ceremony held on November 18th, 2019 in Beijing

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law was invited to an MoU signing ceremony during the Belgian Economic Mission to the People’s Republic of China, presided by Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, Representative of His Majesty the King, held in Beijing on November 18th, 2019.  The MoU was between the European Data Protection Office of Belgium, represented by Ms. Jane Murphy, founder and chair of the board and HJM Asia Law with the objective to raise awareness about GDPR in Asia and to explore opportunities to develop and support activities and services related to the application of GDPR to Asian companies.  With a delegate of more than 600 participants, it was truly a very special event.  If you are interested to learn more, you may click on this link courtesy of the Kingdom of Belgium.

 

Seminar on “Intellectual Property: Legal concepts and best practices for aerospace companies doing business in Canada and Asia” held on November 14th, 2019 in Montréal, Canada

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law had the privilege to present on the topic of “Intellectual Property: Legal concepts and best practices for aerospace companies doing business in Canada and Asia” at the IP Seminar jointly organised by Aéro Montréal and Export Québec. Caroline had the pleasure to be joined by Xavier Genest, Intellectual Property Advisor of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), who gave a presentation from a Canadian perspective.  Caroline and Xavier spoke about trademarks, patents, trade secrets, industrial designs and copyright, and explained how the protection of products by IP rights can give an advantage over competitors with case studies.

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law is in the headlines of Les Affaires, a business newspaper from Montreal, Canada. The article titled “The will to make her mark abroad” was published  in Les Affaires on November 9th, 2019 and Caroline was one of the 10 French Canadian having founded/managing companies outside of Canada.  Caroline, a McGill law graduate, shared about her motivation to find a niche when moving to Asia in 1998, which propelled her to establish a law firm in China and then in Singapore in 2005 after working for 6 years in Asia for UK and Chinese firms meeting the demands for legal services in the Asian region and focusing on European speaking French. Besides having offices in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Singapore, Caroline’s team has set up an Asia/Africa desk assisting Chinese companies doing business on the African continent.

HJM Asia Law Women Luncheon fall 2019, Singapore, October 2nd, 2019

Inter-Pacific Bar Association (“IPBA”) Annual Meeting and Conference in Singapore, April 25th to 27th, 2019

Caroline Berube, Canadian based in Asia, author of the book “Doing Business in China” and Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law was pleased to support Commonwealth Day 2019. The event was held at the historical colonial Eden Hall, British High Commissioner’s Residence in Singapore. Other major supporters included Prudential UK and Dyson. The evening was well attended by over 300 guests and officials from Singapore and other Commonwealth countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.

HJM Asia Law Women Luncheon 2019, Singapore, March 22nd, 2019

“International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th every year. … After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8th became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations!” HJM Asia Law proudly pursued the tradition and hosted its annual women’s lunch on March 22nd, 2019. This year, HJM invited a group of more than 35 professional women coming from 25 different countries and with various backgrounds and expertise. We celebrated women leadership and business successes of this amazing group! This was another great network opportunity and forum to share each other’s accomplishments and achievements.

Annual Canada Night at the Races 2019 in Singapore, February 22nd, 2019

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, hosted 20 guests at the annual Canada Night at the Races at the end of February 2019. HJM Asia Law had its own HJM Asia Cup! Canada Night at the Races is an event organised by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and held at the Singapore Turf Club annually. Canada Night at the Races is one of the biggest Canadian events in Singapore and once again, it was a huge success with about 250 Canadian, local and expat attendees.

Canadian Alumni Singapore, Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner, Singapore, February 11th, 2019

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, and author of the book “Doing Business in China” has agreed to be one of the main sponsors of the Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner, organized by the Canadian Alumni Singapore. The Canadian Alumni Singapore (CA-S) was formed by a volunteer group of Colombo Plan scholars in 1979. It is managed by an elected Executive Committee with guidance from a Board of Advisors. The High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore was invited to serve as Vice-Chair in the founding Board of Advisors, a tradition which continues today.

13th annual Canada Night at the Races 2018 in Singapore, February 9th, 2018

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law and Kelly Vouvoussiras, Partner, had 18 guests at the 13th annual Canada Night at the Races. HJM Asia Law had their own HJM Asia Cup! Canada Night at the Races, hosted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, was held at the Singapore Turf Club. HJM Asia law has been having its own Cup for the last few years. China 13th Five Year Plan & Foreign Investment Environment Roundtable, Beijing, August 31st, 2017

Michelle Ye, the compliance associate of HJM Asia Law China office, attended the “China 13th Five Year Plan & Foreign Investment Environment Roundtable” organized by Global Intelligence Communications in Beijing, China. The roundtable talked about the latest legislative and policy development of 13th Five Year Plan, investment models and approached in the new foreign investment landscape in China.

The International Bar Association held its 3rd Annual “Investing in Africa” Conference in Paris, France on June 22nd to 23rd, 2017.

Convinced that the next big wave is Asia in Africa, HJM managing partner, Caroline Berube, spoke at the session : “Opportunities and Challenges for Investors and how advisors can assist” sharing her experience about Chinese, Singaporean and other Asian investors doing business in Africa.
The panel was composed of investors and advisors offering insight on best advices for corporate clients seeking opportunities on the African continent emphasizing also on the diversity of the continent on which Caroline agreed given her knowledge of the Asia Pacific region and its diverse cultural and economic diversity similar to Africa. Panellists were very diversified, knowledgeable on the topic as well as international coming from China, the USA, South Africa, Switzerland and Belgium.

On the occasion of McGill University, Desautels Faculty of Management, MBA International Study Trip 2017 to Singapore, Caroline Berube was a speaker on the topic “The Ins and Outs of Doing Business in Singapore and South-East Asia – a Legal Insider’s Perspective”, which session took place on April 23rd, 2017.  Caroline also attended the networking reception organized by the High Commission of Canada to Singapore, to meet with MBA students, on April 26th, 2017.  As President of the McGill alumni, it is always with great pleasure that Caroline participates in events involving McGill students.

New Zealand International Social Media Association Launch, Wellington, April 3rd, 2017

As one of ISMA’s Board Members, Caroline Berube attended ISMA launch successfully held and organised by Scott Moran from Duncan Cotteril in Wellington, New Zealand.  ISMA is a not-for-profit membership organisation whose goal is to identify and resolve the global legal issues arising out of social media.  ISMA is dedicated to harmonising legislation and policies on an international scale to advance, protect and balance the rights of businesses and individuals.  More launches to be announced soon in other countries!

Sorbonne-ASSAS International Law School – LL.M. International Business Law 2017 Winter Short Program, March 14th to 16th, 2017

Caroline Berube had the privilege to teach a wonderful class for 10.5 hours during the 2017 Winter Short Program at the Sorbonne Assas International Law School, Singapore Campus. The class had three very interactive sessions  with Master students, Private Practitioners and General Counsels on “Doing Business in China” covering the Chinese legal system, IP laws, labour laws, corporate law and commercial contracts in China while providing concrete insights with case studies and the approach of the Chinese market by overseas investors.  Details of the program can be viewed here.

Primerus Asia Pacific Client Seminar 2017, Hong Kong, March 1st and 2nd, 2017 – Employment Law in Asia– Strategies for Protecting Your Greatest Asset

Moderating a session on hiring and firing staff in Asia using a comparative approach with my panellists Edward Sun from Hengtai Law Offices in Shanghai, LiPu Lee from Formosan Brothers in Taiwan, and Suwit Suwan from Navinlaw LLC Primerus in Thailand was interesting and done in a very interactive way including input and questions from some of the 60 attendees involved in legal practices in Hong Kong.  This session was part of the program organised by Primerus, society of world’s top independent boutique law firms. The program was held in conjunction with the Association of Corporate Counsel International Legal Affairs Committee in Hong Kong. The full program of the seminar can be viewed here.

Young Global Leaders Annual Summit 2016, Tokyo, October 18th to October 21st, 2016

Caroline Berube, the Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was selected as a Young Global Leader  by the World Economic Forum which recognizes the most distinguished leaders under the age of 40. She attended the Young Global Leaders Annual Summit 2016 in Tokyo. The WEF is an international institution committed to improving the state of the world through public-private cooperation and engages political, business, academic and other leaders of society in collaborative efforts to shape global, regional and industry agendas. Caroline Berube elected as the 2nd Vice President for the Canadian Alumni Singapore (CA-S), April 2016

Caroline Berube was elected as the 2nd Vice President for Canadian Alumni in Singapore (CA-S) for the second year in a row. Evelyn Wong, the CAS President, is very keen to further develop the association and grow and connect the Canadian community in Singapore. Last year was big for Singapore as it celebrated its 50th anniversary and CAS was a big part of celebrations which were organized in partnership with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the High Commission of Canada in Singapore. 2015 was an exciting and memorable year, not only with celebrations of Singapore’s 50th and 50 years of Canada-Singapore bilateral relations, but because there was a notable increase in visits by Canadian universities and events organized with and by alumni last year!  Other events included the Canadian Great Skate, a bowling tournament and the Terry Fox Run. Caroline will assist CAS in growing the association through her McGill connection as Caroline is the President of the McGill Alumni Chapter in Singapore.

Back to school at Sorbonne Asia Campus in July 2016!

Another fun time teaching “students”  for the executive legal three-week program in the summer of 2016 at Sobonne-Assas International Law School, Singapore campus. Caroline will give a week lecture to legal experienced executive/GC “students” mostly from the US and Europe on various aspects of commercial & contractual agreements, corporate structure and M&A deals in the Asia Pacific region. Caroline draws on her experience from working in Asia for more than 18 years with SMEs, MNCs and foreign banks, advising them in the fields of commercial law, IP, HR and M&A.

IBA China Working Group, first ever, newsletter, February 2016

The China Working Group (CWG) is a new addition to the IBA Asia Pacific Forum. The CWG was formed in order to advise the IBA on activities in China and to keep IBA members aware of various events and initiatives in the region. Since China is one of the largest growing markets, it is of vital importance that the CWG provide advice on issues specific to China, including opportunities with governmental organisations and legal associations.. Various articles were included in the newsletter on topics such as government control and the rule of law, pricing sustainability, an update on employment and patent law, foreign debt and China’s new third board. This will be the first of – hopefully – many newsletters the CWG will produce this year, keeping IBA members up to date on the latest developments in the region. SIHA Ice Dragons Classic Ice Hockey Tournament, March 9th-12th, 2016 (Singapore)

HJM Asia Law believes sports are crucial for kids and has agreed to once again to be one of the main sponsors of the Third Annual Singapore Ice Hockey Association (SIHA) Ice Dragons Classic Hockey Tournament taking place at the J-Cube Rink in Singapore. The Singapore Ice Dragons were founded in 2001 by a group of dedicated dads from the Canadian Association and aims to promote youth ice hockey in Singapore. Kids from Australia, China, Malaysia and Singapore participated in the tournament. HJM awarded the winners during the Finals Ceremony and we congratulate all the participating teams on their hard work!

IBA Asia Pacific Regional Forum, January 2016 – Caroline Berube newly appointed as the Co-Chair!

Caroline has been appointed as the Co-Chair of the International Bar Association (IBA) Asia Pacific Forum (APF) as of January 2016. She is really excited to contribute to the growth the APF’s awareness and activities in Asia. Caroline has held various positions over the years within the APF including being the senior editor in charge of the IBA APF newsletter. Currently, Caroline is also the Co-Chair of the newly formed APF China Working Group.

China Working Group is a new creation of the International Bar Association (IBA) of the Asia Pacific Forum (APF). Caroline Berube, given her long standing work experience in China, has been appointed as the Co-Chair of the China Working Group and is excited to advise the IBA on activities in China and keep the IBA’s Chinese members aware of various events and initiatives in the region. Since China is one of the largest growing markets, it is imperative for the China Working Group to provide advice on issues specific to the country including opportunities with governmental organizations and legal associations.  The China Working Group will aim to better understand the needs of  Chinese lawyers and the Chinese legal community and recruit more speakers and attendees to IBA events in the region.  Caroline looks forward to guiding and expanding the group in 2016.

This year Caroline Berube was selected as the Young Global Leader (YGL) for the World Economic Forum (WEF) which recognizes the most distinguished leaders under the age of 40, nominated from around the world. Global Inspirational Leadership Award- Caroline Berube, World Women Leadership Congress and Awards (February 2015)

Caroline Berube, the Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was awarded the Global Inspirational Leadership Award during the World Women Leadership Congress which took place in Mumbai in February 2015. In addition to receiving the award, Caroline was also a speaker on a panel titled “Women Leaders as Architects of Change.” As debates on the empowerment of women takes place around the world, the conference in Mumbai aimed to bring to the forefront of business the importance of having women in positions of change. “Dreams are made if people try”- Terry Fox Run, February 8th, 2015 (Singapore)

Over the weekend, the Terry Fox run gathered a large number of Singaporeans and expats aiming to raise funds for cancer research. Sponsored by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and the Canadian Alumni of Singapore, the run gathered thousands of participants. HJM Asia Law has supported the run for a number of years in both Singapore and Guangzhou. This year Caroline was also representing the McGill Alumni in Singapore as she was the team captain. Caroline Berube appointed as the chair of the Primerus Business Law Institute- Asia Pacific (PBLI-AP), Fall 2014

We are proud to announce that Caroline Berube, the Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, was appointed as the chair of the Primerus Business Law Institute- Asia Pacific (PBLI-AP). Her term has officially commenced at the Primerus Monterey Conference in October 2014. Caroline is very excited to the year ahead and has already assisted in planning several Asia Pacific initiatives such as the PBLI-AP newsletter and the “Primerus Doing Business in the Asia Pacific Region” chart.  Additionally, the Primerus Asia Pacific meeting will be held in Singapore in April 2015 in partnership with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce of Singapore.

12th Terry Fox Run, December 6th, 2014 (Guangzhou)

Last week the HJM team in Guangzhou participated in the annual 12th Terry Fox Run which is strongly supported by the Canadian Chamber in Guangzhou, Consulate General of Canada in Guangzhou, Guangdong Friendship Association, Guangdong Charity Federation and Guangzhou Friendship Association. It is an annual tradition for HJM’s staff to participate in the run. The Singapore team will participate in the Terry Fox Run on February 8th, 2015 at the Big Splash on the East Coast in Singapore.

Teaching Assignment at the Executive Legal International Summer Class, Sorbonne Assas International Law School, July 2014

Caroline Berube, Managing Partner of HJM Asia Law, taught a 20-hour summer executive course at the Sorbonne Assas International Law School, Singapore Campus. Caroline was one of three professors teaching executives on legal corporate structures in Asia, M&A and restructuring deals, IP and tax, taking into account legal and compliance requirements in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong.  Caroline is looking forward to teaching a similar course at Sorbonne in the Summer 2015. Caroline is a regular speaker at international IBA APF conferences, a moderator of two IBA APF supported sessions at the IBA Annual Conference in Tokyo in October 2014, and is the senior editor in charge of the IBA APF newsletter.

Canada Night at the Races, February 28th, 2014 (Singapore)

HJM Asia Law was a proud sponsor of Canada Night at the Races, organized by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, which was held at the Singapore Turf Club. The managing partner of HJM, Caroline Berube, recently earned the Certified Corporate Director (ASC) designation. Under the agreement of the Directors College- a joint venture between The Conference Board of Canada and the DeGroote School of Business, at McMaster University and the Collège des administrateurs de sociétés (CAS) of l’Université de Laval, the director education designations “Chartered Director” (C.Dir.) and “Administrateur de sociétés certifié” (ASC) are recognized as equivalent.  This agreement is the product of a rigorous process of due diligence by both Colleges to ensure the fundamental structure, content and exam processes of the two respective programs are equivalent. Fall 2013- McGill Law Focus Online Magazine (FAB)

Caroline Berube recently joined the Faculty of Law Advisory Board (FAB) which is the chief advisory group to the Dean and the McGill University. It provides counsel to the Dean on interpreting and promoting the Law Faculty to its external constituencies and offers advice on fundraising and management issues for which the Dean seeks consultation. It assists in the review of the Law Faculty’s long range plans and proposes sources of additional revenue. The FAB is composed of distinguished leaders from a cross section of business and professional sectors across Canada and internationally. Alliott Group 2013 Worldwide Conference, October 22-25th, 2013 (Hong Kong)

HJM Asia Law Managing Partner, Caroline Berube, will join a panel discussion on “Everything you wanted to know about Business in Asia Pacific that you will not find on Google.”  Caroline will provide her insights on the China perspective along with other selected members and colleagues who will share their view from their respective regions.

As you know, Caroline Berube has passed her examination for the academic certification in corporate governance offered by the College of Corporate Directors (hereinafter the “CAS”) of the Laval University in Canada. The mission of CAS is to contribute to the development and promotion of good governance by providing the highest quality corporate directors training in a dynamic environment. CAS is unique in Quebec and leads to the Certified Corporate Director (ASC) designation.
